Career Tools - Your CV

If you are serious about a job change then you need to be serious about your CV, or resume. Your CV is a summary of your career history, and the skills and experience you have gained in the course of it. A good CV should:

  • Attract attention
  • Create a good impression
  • Present your skills and qualities clearly and concisely

For most potential employers your CV will be your introduction. Take a few moments to visualize the situation from a recruiters' or hiring managers' point of view......

They may have literally hundreds of responses to each job advertised on the internet, probably somewhat less for those vacancies advertised in the press. They will spend seconds scanning each CV to identify key points. Those CV's likely to be put on the interview pile will readily show:

  • The required skills
  • The relevant experience
  • Evidence of similar challenges

So:

Keep it simple!
Keep it short - ideally no more than 2 sides of A4.
Keep it clear - produced on a word processor with no spelling or grammatical errors, alterations or amendments. Use good quality white or cream paper, black print-avoid gimmicks and never send photocopies.
Keep it relevant- employers are looking for answers to two main questions:

  • Can this person do the job?
  • Will they fit in?
